Our first goal is always to save your natural teeth. Sometimes a tooth is too damaged, infected, or crowded to keep, and removing it is the healthiest choice for your smile. At Monument Family Dentistry, we perform tooth extractions gently and comfortably right here in our Richmond office.
When Is a Tooth Extraction Needed?
Your dentist may recommend removing a tooth if you have:
- Severe decay or a fracture that can't be repaired with a filling, crown, or root canal
- An infection or abscess that threatens nearby teeth or bone
- Advanced gum disease that has loosened the tooth
- Crowding that needs to be corrected before orthodontic treatment
- Impacted or problem wisdom teeth
- Baby teeth that have not fallen out on their own
What to Expect
We start with an exam and x-rays to see the tooth, its roots, and the surrounding bone. Before the extraction, we numb the area thoroughly so you feel pressure but not pain. A simple extraction removes a visible tooth in one piece. A surgical extraction may be needed for teeth that are broken at the gum line or have not fully come in.
Recovery and Aftercare
Most patients feel back to normal within a few days. We will send you home with clear instructions. Rest, bite gently on gauze, stick to soft foods, and avoid straws and smoking so the blood clot can protect the healing socket. You can find detailed guidance on our post-op instructions page.
Replacing a Missing Tooth
A gap from a missing tooth can let neighboring teeth shift and make chewing harder. We will talk with you about replacement options such as dental implants, bridges, or dentures, so your smile stays healthy and complete.
